SUMMARY:The Big Planting Weekend(s)
DESCRIPTION:The Big Planting Weekend(s) at Hawkridge Homestead\nA collective act of care\, labour\, and seasonal transition \nEvery year\, there is a moment when the farm turns a corner. \nThe soil is ready. Seedlings are waiting. The weather is (usually) cooperative. And the amount of work required exceeds what one household can—or should—do alone. \nThe Big Planting Weekend is when we meet that moment together. \nThis year\, we are offering two planting weekends to make participation more accessible and to spread the labour more sustainably: \n\n\nPart 1: May 15-18\, 2026 \n\n\nPart 2: May 23-34\, 2026 \n\n\nParticipants are welcome to join for one day\, one full weekend\, or both weekends\, depending on capacity and interest. Camping overnight at the farm is available for those who want to stay. \n\nWhat This Weekend Is About\nThe Big Planting Weekend is not a workshop. It is a collective work gathering grounded in permaculture ethics\, community care\, and shared responsibility. \nOver these weekends\, we will be: \n\n\ntransplanting thousands of seedlings into gardens and fields \n\n\ndirect sowing crops for summer and fall \n\n\nbuilding and adjusting trellises and supports \n\n\nmulching\, watering\, and stabilizing young plants \n\n\npreparing systems that will carry the farm through the growing season \n\n\nThis is intensive labour\, and it is also deeply social. Work is interwoven with shared meals\, conversation\, rest\, learning-by-doing\, and time around the fire. \nPeople come not just to help plant food\, but to practice another way of being together—one where care\, skill-sharing\, and mutual support are as important as getting things done. \n\nLearning Through Doing (Together)\nThere is no single instructor for the weekend. \nLearning happens through: \n\n\nworking side by side \n\n\nasking questions as they arise \n\n\nsharing experience across different skill levels \n\n\nmaking decisions together in response to real conditions \n\n\nWe’ll talk about: \n\n\nwhy certain crops go where they do \n\n\nhow timing and spacing affect long-term yields \n\n\nhow to read soil\, weather\, and plant stress \n\n\nhow permaculture design shows up in very practical ways \n\n\nIf you’ve never planted at this scale before\, you’ll learn a lot.If you have\, your experience is part of what makes the weekend work. \n\nCamping\, Care\, and Community\nParticipants are welcome to camp overnight at the farm during each weekend. Evenings are intentionally slower: shared dinners\, campfires\, long conversations\, and rest. \nChildren are welcome. Care work is part of the system. No one is expected to work at full capacity all day. \nWe work hard—and we stop when we need to. \n\nHow the Two-Part Structure Works\nSplitting the planting into two weekends allows: \n\n\nmore flexibility for participants \n\n\na more sustainable pace of work \n\n\ntime between weekends to observe\, adjust\, and respond \n\n\nEach weekend will have its own focus depending on weather and crop readiness\, but both are part of the same collective effort. You do not need to attend both to participate meaningfully. \n\nWhat to Expect\n\n\nFull days of physical\, hands-on work (with breaks) \n\n\nTasks adapted to different bodies\, skills\, and energy levels \n\n\nShared meals and informal learning throughout the day \n\n\nWorking outdoors in all weather conditions \n\n\nA strong emphasis on consent\, communication\, and care \n\n\nNo prior farming experience is required. \n\nShared Commitments\nThis gathering is guided by the same values as Permaclub: \n\n\ncare comes first (people and land) \n\n\nlabour is reciprocal\, not extractive \n\n\nlearning is collective and co-created \n\n\nwe actively practice inclusion and anti-oppression \n\n\neveryone contributes in ways that are realistic for them \n\n\n\nPractical Notes\n\n\nBiosecurity: Please do not wear footwear or farm clothing that has been used on other farms without sanitizing them first. \n\n\nWeather: We work in all weather. Please dress accordingly. \n\n\nFood: Shared meals will be coordinated; details provided closer to the event. \n\n\nCamping: Camping details\, accessibility notes\, and logistics will be shared with registered participants. \n\n\n\nWhy This Matters\nPlanting weekends are where the season is set. They are also where community is made—through shared effort\, shared responsibility\, and shared time. \nIf you want to understand what permaculture looks like beyond diagrams and theory\, this is it: people\, land\, and care moving together at the pace the season requires. \nWe’d love to have you with us—for a day\, a weekend\, or however you can show up.
