Permaclub at Hawkridge Homestead
A monthly day of shared farm labour, learning, and food systems practice.
Participants exchange time and care for hands-on knowledge, community, and—during harvest months—a share of farm produce.
Permaculture ethics: Earth Care · People Care
Principles in focus: Observe & interact · Integrate rather than segregate
February work at the farm centres care rather than production. This Permaclub day focuses on perennial management, greenhouse system maintenance, and winter animal care—tasks that are often invisible but foundational to resilient food systems.
Participants will work on pruning and managing raspberry canes, refreshing greenhouse beds, testing automated watering systems, and supporting winter goat care (including hoof trimming). Alongside hands-on work, we’ll discuss why winter is a critical design phase: a time for observation, system adjustment, and preventative care rather than output.
This day emphasizes that permaculture is not just about growing food—it is about maintaining relationships with plants, animals, infrastructure, and each other during low-energy seasons.
You’ll leave with: practical skills in perennial care and animal stewardship, and a clearer understanding of how winter labour supports long-term ecological health.
